The pronunciation of gif is debated because the original creators pronounced it “Jiff,” after the peanut butter brand. I prefer the hard g, but if we’re honest it has the weaker argument: plenty of acronyms are pronounced differently from the words they’re made out of. Search YouTube for “The Pronunciation of GIF”; Hank Green made a good video where he explains it.
